It’s been found that a whopping 90 percent of the world’s population is right-handed. That leaves us lefties as the remaining 10 percent. This means that in a world dominated by right-handed people, being left-handed can make things that seem easy just a little more difficult. This can also be true when it comes to learning how to crochet.
When I first learned how to crochet, I struggled flipping the actions of a tutorial in my mind from right to left. It left me confused and unsure of how to continue. However, with these 5 tips, you won’t have to struggle through the same turmoil.
Tip 1-Find Left-Handed Tutorials
Although they are few and far between, left-handed tutorials for crochet beginners are out there. They may not be exactly what you need or want, but they will get the job done. Use these tutorials to learn the basic motions and stitches. Eventually, you will be proficient enough in the art of crochet that when you are watching a right-handed person demonstrate a more complex stitch, you will understand how to convert it to your left-handed ways with more ease.
Tip 2-Mirror The video
Now this may seem very extreme and really only the most extreme of people should use this tip. If you are just so determined to watch a right-handed person’s tutorial because they explain it in a way that you can really understand, then you can try to mirror the video, so you aren’t struggling to mirror it in your mind. To do this, you will first need to screen record the video in question. Once it has been fully recorded, you can go into the video editing mode on your phone and flip the screen in the crop section in editing mode. Boom. Now you can watch the whole video so that it appears the person is left-handed.
Tip 3-Learn to read a pattern.
Once you have learned the basic stitches of crochet, you can learn how to read a crochet pattern. And lucky for you, this doesn’t involve hands at all! You can learn this from anyone regardless of whether they are left-handed or not. When you are finally able to read a crochet pattern and you know how to do all the stitches in that pattern, you won’t need any more tutorials. It’s crazy but true. No more hand confusion.
Tip 4-Proper holding of utensils
In the past I have tried random crochet gadgets that help you with holding the yarn. Sadly, none of them worked because they were designed for people that were right-handed. Specifically, I had this issue with a ring that holds the yarn on your finger. It was devastating because the ring looked like a cat, but now it’s useless. Instead of wasting money on these right-handed luxuries, it’s better to learn how to properly hold the yarn around your fingers, and videos showing this can be easily found for left-handers.
Tip 5-Patience
Self-Explanatory. Patience is key here. You got this.
